Marie has been working with a young person for approximately six months, providing consistent support and guidance. When they first met, the young person was in relative foster care, had left school after 3rd year, and was quite shy and isolated. His social worker had highlighted the need for support with his future education, training, and employment, as well as regular welfare check-ins.
At the beginning, the young person was adamant about not returning to mainstream education and showed no interest in Youthreach, despite the suggestion from his social work team. Through patience, encouragement, and consistent guidance, Marie gradually helped him to see the opportunities Youthreach could offer. After attending a meeting and visiting the centre, the young person's perspective completely shifted he saw it as an exciting and positive alternative education route that suited his needs, especially with the challenges he had faced in mainstream education, such as frequent school moves and dyslexia.
Marie also worked with the young person to build his confidence and life skills, helping him create a CV, learn job-search techniques, and prepare for opportunities. As a result, the young person secured a part-time job, completed Manual Handling and Safe Pass courses, and has been accepted to start Youthreach in September. He is now considering completing the full two-year program, with his sights set on a future construction apprenticeship.
The young person is now more focused, motivated, and positive about his future - a transformation that truly highlights the impact of Marie's dedication and skill.
